Specialists in wheelchair-accessible vehicles.
Buying a new car is an exciting and important experience: taking a wheelchair with you shouldn’t make things complicated. That’s why we’ll listen carefully to your entire wish-list and propose a solution that works brilliantly for everyone — including the whole family (plus pets!) and your friends.
Accessible Vehicles is part of Lateral Design, www.latdes.co.uk an independent British company specialising in conversion equipment for wheelchair-accessible vehicles. You probably haven’t heard of them: being loud isn’t really their style, and they work with the trade rather than end-users. But since we’re the retail side of the business, the great news for you is that you can now come direct to us!
Lateral invests heavily in developing new technological and safety advances for wheelchair-accessible vehicles. All of our conversion equipment and support therefore comes to you backed by years of Lateral’s experience and expertise – and that means high-quality products offering excellent value and usability.
We understand exactly what you want from the supplier of your wheelchair-accessible vehicle:
Firstly, you want a car which is more than simply accessible. It also has to look great; have all the features you’d want in a new car; offer a great driving experience; and be just as enjoyable and useful at times when you don't have to travel with your wheelchair.
Secondly, you need us to understand that you’re buying a complete vehicle, not just a conversion. A new car is a high-value purchase and an important buying decision — so we’re here to help you make the right decision about the whole purchase, from start to finish and beyond. After all, conditions change, families change, and even wheelchairs change… and not always when you want them to. We're here to help, whatever comes your way.
Thirdly, we know you want genuine customer service, not just the promise of it. That means all the right information up-front; a timely and efficient conversion; and faultless after-sales support. It means proactive communication, and it means never promising what we can’t deliver.
We know that these three criteria really do set us apart. Why not give us a call, and see for yourself?
Meet the guys behind the magic
Steve's introduction to accessible transport began at a young age; on school holidays he often accompanied his father, who drove adapted buses all over the U.K.
Jo's gentle manner and huge experience with disability and travel started with her father's business back in the early 1980s — the highly regarded Invatravel Conversions.
Steve's introduction to accessible transport began at a young age; on school holidays he often accompanied his father, who drove adapted buses all over the U.K. Fascinated with cars for as long as he can remember, he began restoring his own VW Beetle at the age of 15. A year later, he secured a job at a vehicle-restoration company, where he worked for the next 4 years while studying motor mechanics at college. After completing his education Steve began working with adults with learning disabilities, and met the dealer who supplied them with their accessible vehicles.
Steve quickly worked his way up to mobility advisor, supplying many hundreds of cars across the UK over the next 10 years. He understands both the engineering and human elements of adapted vehicles, and his vast experience in the types of vehicle available means he can help customers to identify a suitable car quickly, easily and without fuss.
Out of work, Steve can usually be found touring remote Scottish Islands in his motorhome or enjoying a drive in his classic Volkswagen.
Steve joined the Lateral family in late 2012 to set up the Accessible Vehicles side of the business.

Jo's gentle manner and huge experience with disability and travel started with her father's business back in the early 1980s — the highly regarded Invatravel Conversions. She initially worked in the care industry before finally joining the expanding family business where she quickly moved from an administration position to heading up sales of the VW Caddy, eventually becoming a director of the business that latterly specialised in high-end VW-Caravelle-based conversions.
In 2010, Jo joined Steve to work on sales of the InFront range of vehicles.
Jo’s a true petrolhead — and can often be found attending classic-car rallies and hillclimbs with her father. She also enjoys a peaceful weekend away in her camper van and long walks with her dog.
Along with Steve, Jo joined the Lateral family to head up the opening and launch of Accessible Vehicles in late 2012.

10 good reasons to talk to us first
Dare we come out and say it? We think some companies make buying an accessible vehicle a dull and boring experience - whereas we think getting a new car is exciting, important and fun.
We understand that the person using a wheelchair isn’t the only one who’ll travel in the vehicle you choose. So we take everyone’s needs into account, from the family’s newest addition to pets, friends, sports gear and anything else you might need to cart around with you.
We’ve been around for a lot longer than you think. That’s because we’re the direct-to-the-customer arm of Lateral Design Concepts, www.latdes.co.uk the UK’s leading supplier of wheelchair-accessible cars and conversion kits to the trade.
We have an encyclopaedic (and worryingly nerdy) knowledge of wheelchair-accessible cars. We know who does which vehicles in which different ways, what the prices are, and what the issues are.
In a world of call centres and faceless companies, we offer something very simple, yet reassuring: a friendly, named point of contact and the opportunity to build a lasting relationship with people who listen and remember. We’ll even come and talk to you at your own home.
Your new vehicle is a big investment, and you’ll probably own it for at least 5 years. So we see it as our job to involve, inform, guide and inspire you every step of the way towards making the right decision for you.
We invest in our customers’ feedback and ideas. We check up on how our vehicles work, on where a small design change could make a big difference, and on how we could perform better.
We want to be your first port of call whenever you have a question — even if we can’t help you ourselves, and have to pass you on to another firm. We have such a reputation for being helpful that many people recommend us even though they’ve never bought anything from us!
Unlike most companies, we include metallic paint, air-conditioning & a rear seat as standard, at no extra cost!
We’ll fit a vehicle to you, not the other way around. We take a bespoke approach with everyone.
